Humanitarian Health Scholarships at Johns Hopkins University

The Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health is a unique and collaborative Johns Hopkins academic program. This is however conducted jointly by the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing. It is hosted by the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Drawing upon a variety of disciplines, including epidemiology, demography, emergency, and disaster. Others include medicine, health systems management, nutrition/food security, environmental engineering, mental health, political science, and human rights. The Center collaborates with a variety of organizations including national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Also, the multilateral and UN organizations, and governmental agencies, as well as other research institutions on field-based research and humanitarian projects.

Two Humanitarian Health Scholarships are available for students from low- and middle-income countries who wish to apply for the online Master of Applied Science (MAS) in Humanitarian Health program at John Hopkins University. All enrolled MAS students will also receive the OPAL (Online Programs in Applied Learning) Scholarship, which is a per-credit amount that will be applied to all required courses throughout the academic program.

In addition, they have the vision of pursuing new knowledge and disseminate this learning to save lives. Also reducing human suffering and other consequences of humanitarian emergencies and disasters.

Host Institution

The host institution is the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Therefore, International students will need to gain admission to study a course to be able to win the scholarship award.

Level of Study/Field of Study

Any eligible course that the institution offers will grant you the award. Therefore, applicants are advised to go to the official website below to know the courses the institution has to offer. Also, this scholarship scheme is for Master of Applied Science in Humanitarian Health (Online) master’s degree only.

Citizens and residents of low- or middle-income countries (LMICs).

Number of Scholarship

The number of scholarships awarded at this time is two.

Scholarship Value

The Humanitarian Health Scholarship covers US$10,000 of the tuition cost, disbursed over the length of the program.

The OPAL Scholarship: All students in an OPAL MAS or Certificate program will be awarded this scholarship, in the amount of US$460 per credit. This scholarship is designated for tuition costs only and is disbursed incrementally for each credit taken towards required coursework.


Applicants of the Humanitarian Health Scholarships must be citizens and residents of low- or middle-income countries (LMICs), as defined by the World Bank. Applicants who are temporarily residing in high-income countries may be considered as well. However, they will have to contact the University for additional information. Moreover, only those who are fluent in speaking and writing English are eligible. Also, they must possess at least a Bachelor’s degree, with a strong record of successful academic performance. They have to be professionally involved in humanitarian health emergencies/disasters for over 2 years. Also, have plans to continue to work in these contexts after completion of the degree. Humanitarian health emergencies/disasters refer to a wide range of settings and situations that includes conflicts, natural disasters, infectious disease outbreaks as well as mixed migration in low- and middle-income countries.

Prospective applicants from the US and other high-income countries are not eligible for the Humanitarian Health Scholarship for this program.

Those who wish to be considered for the Scholarships for the MAS Humanitarian Health program, must apply for admission to the course by 15 May 2020 and complete your application by 1 July 2020. The course begins in the Fall of each year.
